Justice League director Zack Snyder has given his thoughts on the new Superman movie costume for James Gunn’s DC Universe. 2023 brought an end to the DCEU timeline, paving the way for the new DC Universe franchise to come to life, which will start with Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters.” The first film that will be coming out of the DC Universe slate is Gunn’s Superman movie, which will set the foundation for the new franchise.
In a new The Hollywood Handle interview, Snyder was asked if he had seen David Corenswet’s Superman costume for the upcoming DC Universe reboot. As there have been a lot of comparisons to Henry Cavill’s original suit, the filmmaker chimed in with the following:
I’m gonna say that: let’s see it in the movie. I’m interested to see how it works, you know, as a piece of storytelling. Yeah. But I am excited. I’m excited to see it.
Why Snyder’s Storytelling Comment Is So Important
Snyder makes a valid point about the importance of the Superman costume in the larger context of the story. In Man of Steel, there was a very charged tone as part of Snyder’s vision for the Kryptonian culture, as Cavill’s Clark Kent got his uniform through his heritage rather than having Martha Kent make it, which is the case in a lot of adaptations. That is why the Superman costume in the DCEU timeline looks as alien as it does because it is literally from another planet and society.
For Gunn’s Superman movie, it is unclear where Corenswet is getting his costume from, as the world has only seen the suit through set photos, but in the midst of battle scenes. The origin of that costume could still have an emotional component to it, whether it is something that was part of his ship when he landed on Earth or something his Earth mother makes for him as a meaningful gift. Whether it will be on the same level as Snyder’s approach in the DCEU remains to be seen.
With Gunn’s Superman having finished principal photography, time will tell when the first trailer will roll out. It will likely not be for another couple of months as they are in the post-production stage, which includes a lot of VFX work that comes with this film. Hopefully, at the very least, the first Superman trailer will be released before 2024 is over.
