Alabama football doesn’t have an abundant number of true position battles during preseason camp, but tackle seems to be one.
During the initial few media viewing periods of practice this past week, Elijah Pritchett worked with the first team at left tackle with Wilkin Formby at right tackle.
Then Sunday, reporters saw a different lineup.
Kadyn Proctor lined up at left tackle with the first offensive line that had Formby at right tackle. Pritchett was the second-team right tackle.
“Well, we’re just rotating some guys,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer explained after practice. “So I know you guys aren’t seeing all the reps and everything. Just rotating, especially at tackle. The three interior guys have been pretty consistent with the ones, but just working Pritchett, Formby and Proctor around.”
Media viewing periods have lasted no more than 30 minutes through the first week of fall camp. Essentially, a snippet of practice. There have been minimal team drills during these open times for reporters. Individual drills have filled much of the time.
So, that lends itself to limited knowledge of what is happening in live drills and 11 vs. 11. Nonetheless, reporters note what we see, and that has included changes at tackle with the first offensive line
It will be worth monitoring in the second week to see if Proctor stays with the first group at left tackle and Formby is still the starter at right tackle. Meanwhile, where does Pritchett line up?
“They’ve all been getting their chance and all been continuing to get better and we’ve got plenty of time here but that chemistry for that unit’s going to be critical,” DeBoer said.
Proctor started at left tackle all of 2023 as a freshman. Then he left via the transfer portal to go to Iowa before ultimately reversing his decision. As a result, he missed spring ball in Tuscaloosa. So it makes sense he wasn’t just handed the starting job upon his return. Still, it seems likely the former five-star prospect retakes his old spot.
The question seems to be more so at right tackle. Does Formby win or Pritchett?
There’s also a possibility neither separates before the season opener and Alabama rotates them.
“I have no problem rotating a guy in if he’s earned it,” Chris Kapilovic, the Alabama offensive line coach, said Saturday.
Right now, there seems to be a rotation with just under a month until the first game. Time will tell how long that continues with plenty of practices and two scrimmages to help coaches make a decision. For now, the change up during media viewing periods indicates competition is alive and well at tackle.
