Here’s what Ryan Lindgren’s one-year contract means for his future with the Rangers.
On Tuesday, the New York Rangers re-signed Ryan Lindgren to a one-year $4.5 million contract.
What exactly does this mean and why did the Rangers make this move?
Contract negotiations with Lindgren were going on all summer, but the two sides were reportedly far off on a deal as the team was reportedly looking for a shorter-term deal in the length of two-to-three seasons at around $4 million and $4.25 million per year while Lindgren was seeking a longer-term deal worth up to $5 million.
This one-year contract gives Lindgren and the Rangers more time to construct an extension with the two sides being able to resume negotiations on Jan. 1.
It also gives Lindgren another year to prove himself to Rangers management in hopes to earn the long-term extension that he is currently seeking.
It’s a prove-it deal for Lindgren, so this will be the most important season of his career.
Lindgren has played a valuable role for the Rangers over the past couple years. This past season, the 26-year-old recorded three goals, 14 assists and 17 points in 76 games while averaging 19:21 minutes.
They may have not been able to agree on a long-term extension, but now the Rangers get their reliable defenseman back at a reasonable price and Lindgren still has a chance at landing a big-time extension if he continues to elevate his game.
