New Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan effectively cleaned house when he replaced Mike Vrabel earlier this offseason. Callahan held onto very few members of Vrabel’s 2023 coaching staff.
Most notably, Justin Outten and Chris Harris were retained. Outten will be in a more familiar role as the tight ends coach after he was running backs coach and run game coordinator last season. Harris returns as the defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach.
Callahan essentially moved on from everybody else while implementing new schemes both offensively and defensively. Callahan’s Titans will actually encounter several former coaches on opposite sidelines throughout the 2024 season. We’ve compiled a list, in order according to the schedule.
Week 1: Jason Houghtaling, Chicago Bears assistant OL coach
Arguably the biggest upgrade Callahan’s staff made was going from the inexperienced Jason Houghtaling to legendary offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Houghtaling now holds an assistant role with the Chicago Bears, Tennessee’s Week 1 opponent. He’ll attempt to coach the likes of Darnell Wright to prevent Harold Landry from placing pressure on rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
Week 2: Tony Dews, New York Jets RB coach
Tony Dews shifted from running backs to tight ends last season, but he was previously the Titans’ RB coach for Vrabel’s first five seasons (2018-22). Dews helped Derrick Henry achieve greatness throughout that tenure. The Jets are lucky to have him as he prepares to coach developing youngsters such as Breece Hall, Israel Abanikanda, and Braelon Allen. The Titans face the Jets in Week 2.
Week 4: Ryan Crow, Miami Dolphins OLB coach
The Titans and Dolphins will lock horns in primetime on Week 4 in a rematch of last year’s outstanding Will Levis-driven come-from-behind victory. New Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow held the same title in Tennessee last season. He’s inheriting a talented group in Miami, one that includes Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, Shaq Barrett, and Bradley Chubb.
Week 7: Scott Booker, Buffalo Bills nickel/defensive assistant
Scott Booker was the Titans’ safeties coach last season. Brian Callahan replaced him with Steve Jackson, a veteran player/coach that’s now technically in his third stint with the franchise. Booker holds a unique title in Buffalo as their nickel/senior defensive assistant coach. The Titans are slated to travel to Buffalo in Week 7.
Week 8: Terrell Williams, Detroit Lions DL coach
Mike Vrabel promoted his staunchest assistant, Terrell Williams, to assistant head coach last season, adding that title to his defensive line position coach duties. Williams is an outstanding coach, but it’s no surprise Brian Callahan moved on considering his loyalty to Vrabel. He’s now the Detroit Lions’ defensive line coach and run game coordinator. The Lions are Tennessee’s Week 8 opponent.
Week 9: Tom Quinn, New England Patriots assistant special teams
Tom Quinn became Vrabel’s interim special teams coach in 2023 following the midseason firing of Craig Aukerman. Callahan had trouble filling this position, ultimately appointing the inexperienced Colt Anderson, a coach he knew from Cincinnati. The Titans play the New England Patriots in Week 9, who now employ Quinn as their assistant special teams coach.
Titans 2023 coaches now employed elsewhere
There are various other 2023 Titans coaches who are now employed elsewhere that don’t appear on Tennessee’s 2024 schedule. We figured we’d compile a list of them anyway, in case you were curious to learn where they landed.
Mike Vrabel, Cleveland Browns coaching consultant
The initial expectation was that Mike Vrabel would quickly land a head coaching job elsewhere. That did not happen despite him interviewing with the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers. Vrabel is now with the Cleveland Browns in a coaching/personnel consultant role.
Charles London, Seattle Seahawks QB coach (Titans preseason Week 2)
Brian Callahan replaced Charles London at QB coach with Bo Hardegree. London is now with the Seattle Seahawks, who employ Geno Smith and Sam Howell at quarterback. The Titans will technically see him this season as Seattle is Tennessee’s second preseason opponent.
Tim Kelly, New York Giants TE coach
Vrabel’s offensive coordinator was Tim Kelly, who is now the New York Giants’ tight ends coach. He must navigate through the difficulties of his new role following Darren Waller’s retirement. Kelly will be tasked with coaching up Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson at the position.
Shane Bowen, New York Giants defensive coordinator
It’s a shame the Titans don’t play the Giants in 2024 considering they hired at least three of their 2023 assistants (In addition to Kelly, Bowen appointed former Titans inside linebackers assistant coach Zak Kuhr as a defensive assistant). Bowen was fortunate to land another DC gig. In East Rutherford, he’ll coach one of the best pass-rushing duos in the league in Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns.
Rob Moore, Carolina Panthers WR coach
Callahan replaced wide receivers coach Rob Moore with Tyke Tolbert, another positional coaching veteran. Moore quickly landed the same role with the Carolina Panthers. He’ll have a ton of ascending talents in that room, including Jonathan Mingo and Xavier Leggette, in addition to new WR1 Diontae Johnson.
Bobby King, Philadelphia Eagles ILB coach
Vrabel and Bobby King went way back to their Houston Texans days. Callahan hired Frank Bush as his new off-ball linebackers coach. Bush, like Steve Jackson, is a franchise veteran, now in his fourth (!) stint with the Houston Oilers/Titans. Coach King landed the same role with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he’ll coach Nakobe Dean, Devin White, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., and former Vanderbilt alum Oren Burks.
