Three Saints players that can lock in a roster spot during 2024 training camp

The training camp and preseason portion of the NFL offseason is vital for depth players. Which New Orleans Saints players can prove their value to the team before the regular season begins?

3 Saints that can lock in roster spot during training camp

Landon Young, Offensive Tackle

Young does not project as a start at offensive tackle, and the Saints brought in some more competition for the backup role at either left or right tackle. That being said, the loss of Ryan Ramczyk does open up a bit more breathing room for someone like Young.

He has dealt with injuries so far during his pro career, so he needs to stay available this season. Regardless, a strong camp and preseason should slot in Young as the top option as a backup tackle or swing option for New Orleans.

Johnathan Abram, Safety

Abram is a downhill, powerful veteran safety who plays his best ball in the box. He was a solid special teams player for New Orleans last season, too. Abram brings energy and knows Dennis Allen’s scheme well. He’s got a knack for big hits and stripping the football as well.

The safety must beat out recently-signed Roderic Teamer as the main backup to Tyrann Mathieu. He’s got the upper hand with experience on the defense already, though. Camp and the preseason will both be vital to Abram locking down a bigger role for the Saints in 2024.

Lou Hedley

Hedley is locked into a position battle with rookie Matthew Waybill, entering training camp. Hedley was one of the least productive punters in football during the first half of 2023, but the second half of his season was much more consistent. He found a comfort in lower kicks that picked up yardage on the bounce.

The former rugby boot does not have the biggest leg, but his ability to land the ball inside the twenty is arguably his greatest strength. He showed that at times last season and needs to build upon it, entering 2024 for the Saints.

A strong preseason would be huge for Hedley locking up a roster spot.

All three of these players are in great positions to grab a role for New Orleans in 2024.
