The Future Of Philadelphia Flyers Centre

Welcome to another edition of NHL Rumours! Today we discuss the future of Philadelphia Flyers centre Morgan Frost. He is thrown into the trade ring and can be on the move.

NHL Rumours

Rumour: Spector Hockey talks about the future of Morgan Frost with the Flyers.

Flyers centre Morgan Frost spent most of last season hearing his name thrown around in trade rumors. This offseason, his name seems to be back in the mix of those rumors again. Frost, a first-round selection of Philadelphia in 2017, has not lived up to the expectation to this point. He made his NHL debut in the 2019-2020 season after spending 41 games with the Flyers affiliate, Lehigh Valley, in the AHL. In his first season he was given a small opportunity with the big club, only appearing in 20 games. He didn’t produce much in those games, only seven points to be exact (2g, 5a).

Career With The Flyers

The following season Frost played just two games with Philadelphia, missing the rest of the season due to injury. He started the 2021-22 season with the Phantoms. He appeared in 24 games in the AHL, putting up 19 points (6g, 13a). After this hot start in the AHL, he got the call-up back to Philadelphia. After the call-up, he appeared in 55 games, producing very minimally for the club. He tallied 16 points (5g, 11a), but showed positive upside, and this cemented him into the lineup. This past season, and the season previous to that, Frost only appeared in NHL games and has not been sent back down since his call-up during the 2021-22 season.

Given the latest NHL Rumours, there’s upside regarding Frost. In 2023-23, Frost saw his high production points-wise, and in games played. He played in 81 games and tallied a career-high 46 points (19g, 27a). This past season was relatively similar, as he played in 71 games putting up 41 points (13g, 28a). Despite his very noticeable improvement over these last two seasons, his name seems always to be involved in Flyers trade rumors. Frost and head coach John Tortorella seemed to butt heads at times leading him to less ice times in games and occasionally scratching for games.

Outlook Down The Middle

The latest NHL Rumours can help provide an outlook of the centre depth. Philadelphia isn’t exactly very strong at the centre position at this particular moment either. Frost is probably their best option, or second to captain Sean Couturier. However, as the Flyers are becoming, and already have become a younger team, he may be their best fit for first line center. They did just use their first round selection in this years draft to beef up that centre position. But, draft selection, Jett Luchanko, is only 17 and probably will not be with the Flyers this season. So making a move that includes trading away Frost, probably isn’t in their best interest.

Rumours: What Is Next For Frost

The latest NHL Rumours around Frost make you wonder what comes next. Despite all of this, the Flyers front office have made no statements regarding moving Frost. There is a very high possibility Frost is with Philadelphia for the start of next season.  Frost has definitly shown signs of being a top six forward during his career. Frost most certainly has shown signs of improvement as well over his career, producing more points per game every season. If the Flyers do decide to move on from him, they could be letting a very good player slip right through their fingers. There has not been any price assosciated with him if he is moved. But, I can’t imagine it is going to be anything rather significant.
