At San Diego Comic-Con, one of James Gunn’s new cast members in the upcoming Superman movie opens up on why David Corenswet is the right fit as Krypton’s last son in the DC Universe. 2023 brought an end to the DCEU movie timeline for a new DC Universe to be born under DC Studios. As the Superman movie is still being filmed, principal photography is nearing its end, with the reboot being less than a year out from its release.
During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant’s own Joe Deckelmeier while promoting Alien: Romulus at San Diego Comic-Con, Isabella Merced, who will star as Hawkgirl in Gunn’s Superman movie, was asked what her thoughts were on Corenswet’s interpretation of the iconic DC hero. Merced, who will specifically play the Kendra Saunders version of Hawkgirl, called her co-star “an angel,” stressing that “he is very much Superman,” as she said the following:
That man is an angel. He is very much Superman, he very much has that energy, and I admired working with him. His patience is incredible with his little tight suit in those hot days! I mean, he never complained once.
I’ve been very lucky to work with people like him and Cailee [Spaeny in Alien: Romulus] whose professionalism is just so inspiring. You just go, “I can’t complain for s–t.” They’re doing so much more work and have so much pressure on their backs, yet they handle it with such ease. That was really cool to watch.
How David Corenswet Has Proven To Be A Good Superman Casting Choice
Corenswet Was Even A Popular Fancast.
Whenever the first piece of footage is released, it will get even easier to tell what kind of Superman the DC Universe is getting with Corenswet.
Ever since Corenswet was tapped as the Superman for Gunn’s DC Universe, his casting has been one of the most well-received with the audience. To begin with, as the Superman movie has been filming over the last few months, seeing him in the iconic costume has already won a lot of people over. Based on what Gunn has said about the vision for his Superman film, along with the casting of Corenswet, the DC Universe’s Man of Steel will tap into some traditional aspects and bring new elements to the table.
Corenswet’s casting as the Man of Tomorrow is also very fitting, given his Superman comments a few years ago about how he wanted to play a hopeful iteration of the DC icon. That is where the fan casting of Corenswet as Superman began with many DC fans, which is why his announcement in 2023 was such a big deal. To hear that his cast members feel the same is also a testament to how right this decision was of DC Studios to hire Corenswet as Superman.
Even though the Superman cast couldn’t be at San Diego Comic-Con for a specific Hall H panel, the marketing for the DC film will be fascinating to follow once they are done shooting. Whenever the first piece of footage is released, it will get even easier to tell what kind of Superman the DC Universe is getting with Corenswet. But until then, the DC Universe audience will have to remain patient for the first proper look at Gunn’s Superman movie.
