Alex Ovechkin is a big emoji guy, but he also has a love for memes, according to Washington Capitals teammate Dylan Strome.
Strome spoke with TSN’s Mark Masters while hitting the links on Monday and shared more on his captain, who he said has been in contact with him over the course of the summer in the form of memes.
“He’s a big meme guy, so he’s sending me memes a lot. He’s a big emoji guy… sending memes here back and forth,” Strome told Masters. “He has a pretty good sense of humor, so it’s always fun to hear from him.”
Ovechkin is entering his 20th NHL season and sits 42 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record, and Strome is excited to continue to assist Ovechkin in what’s been dubbed his “GR8 Chase.”
“Everyone knows what’s coming, and we’re excited to be a part of it,” Strome said of Ovechkin, who turns 39 in September.
Strome also took the time to discuss the Capitals’ busy offseason, which saw the team bring in several new players, including Strome’s former teammate and roommate Jakob Chychrun.
“It’s great, we actually lived together at Max Domi’s house in my first year in Arizona before I got traded. A lot of fun to live with him. He’s a great guy, great teammate and very good hockey player, so excited to have him on the backend and moving the pucks up to us forwards,” Strome noted.
As for the other changes, Strome is looking forward to seeing how they translate to the ice.
“Lots of good guys coming in. I think seven new guys, that’s a third of your roster basically… (Spencer Carbery) will have us ready to go at the start of the season,” Strome said, adding, “A lot of guys are motivated and want to build on last year and hopefully turn that goal differential around a little bit.”
