The New Orleans Saints have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Jesse Davis, according to Fields Yates of ESPN. In a corresponding move, New Orleans placed offensive tackle Justin Herron on injured reserve.
Davis, 32, has 72 career starts in 95 career games over seven seasons. He was traded by Minnesota to Pittsburgh for a 2025 conditional seventh-round pick in August of 2022. Davis suited up for 14 games, but made no starts in his one season with the Steelers. His contract was not renewed in 2023.
The San Francisco 49ers added Davis to their active roster for their Thanksgiving game against the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 24. Davis signed to their practice squad in October 31st, and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks as well before landing in San Francisco. They elevated him from their practice squad due to injuries to starters Aaron Banks and Spencer Burford.
Davis has played both tackle and guard in his seven-year NFL career. He joined the Vikings as an unrestricted free agent in March of 2022 after having spent the previous six seasons with the Miami Dolphins.
Davis was a five-year starter with Miami. He was the primary starter at right guard in 2017, 2018 and 2020 and right tackle in 2019 and 2021. Davis has also played left guard and left tackle. His best season, according to Pro Football Focus came in 2020, when he had 62.6 overall grade. While in Miami, Davis became a key contributor at multiple spots, and that is where he earned his most playing time.
Davis has barely played the last two seasons, but his 72 career starts and versatility could be beneficial to New Orleans, who are in need of offensive line help.
Davis went undrafted out of Idaho in 2015. He spent one season with the Seattle Seahawks before making stops with the New York Jets (2016), Dolphins (2016-2021), Vikings (2022), Steelers (2022) and 49ers (2023). The Saints will be his seventh NFL team.
