Saints’ DE Payton Turner: ‘I’m Ready to Get After It’

Saints defensive end Payton Turner has faced a challenging three-year career since being drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints. Despite his potential, injuries have plagued his progress, limiting his impact on the field. However, as he heads into training camp fully healthy after undergoing offseason back surgery, Turner declares he is fully healthy and ready to dominate in the upcoming season. “I felt really good going into last year. Unfortunately, the first game I had that toe injury. I did have an offseason back procedure. I’m feeling good. I’m feeling healthy right now and I’m ready to get after it this year”.

Injury-Plagued Start to Turner’s Career

Impact on Turner’s development

Turner’s rookie season was cut short by a shoulder injury that forced him onto injured reserve, allowing him to play in only five games.

Despite this, he managed to record 12 tackles, three for losses, three quarterback hits, and one sack.

His second season saw him play in a career-high eight games, where he recorded two sacks and 16 tackles.

However, last season was marred by a turf toe injury that sidelined him for most of the year.

He returned to play in two games, recovering one fumble but failing to record any sacks.

The Saints declined to exercise Turner’s fifth-year club option, which would have paid him $13.39 million in 2025. This decision means that Turner will be a free agent after this season.

Despite this, he has been working with the first-team defense during spring practices, filling the void left by the absences of Chase Young and Cameron Jordan.

Turner’s determination to overcome his past injuries is evident in his words.

“The only thing you can do in this league is control what you can control. So, I’ve had some bad luck with some injuries. I’ve taken this year and last year and fine-tuned my process, my routine. I feel like I’m in a good spot heading into this year. I’m excited to see what I can do”.

As Turner looks to make a strong impression this season, he will be hoping to prove his worth to the Saints and potentially secure a long-term contract.

His ability to stay healthy and make significant plays will be crucial in determining his future with the team.

With the Saints’ pass rush needing a boost, Turner’s performance could be pivotal in their success this year.
