After two weeks of training camp, the New Orleans Saints believed they needed to add to their wide receiver group. What better move to make than reuniting with an old friend? That’s exactly what the franchise did on Friday, signing Marquez Callaway to the roster.
The former Tennessee Volunteer got his NFL start with the Saints, signing with the team as an undrafted free agent back in 2020. Despite his undrafted status, Callaway quickly became a contributor for New Orleans, catching 21 passes for 213 yards as a rookie.
In 2021, those numbers exploded for Callaway as he caught 46 passes for 698 yards and six touchdowns. Unfortunately, his numbers dipped to 16 receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown in 2022.
Saints sign Marquez Callaway
Following that season, Callaway joined the Denver Broncos in free agency but was cut after the preseason. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad, but that didn’t work out either. By late November of the 2023 season, the wide receiver was back in New Orleans for his second stint with the team.
However, things were different this time, as Callaway didn’t record a single stat in the three games he appeared in. Followimg the season, he originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers but that didn’t work out. Now he’s back with the Saints for a third stint.
It’s extremely unlikely New Orleans will be getting the 2021 Callaway, but it will be interesting to see if he can create opportunity for himself in the wide receiver room. With Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed as the top two receivers, things are wide open after them. Guys like A.T. Perry, Cedrick Wilson, Bub Means, and Mason Tipton have been competing for the other spots on the depth chart, and Marquez Callaway will now be added to the mix.
