Buffalo Sabres prospect Konsta Helenius will be playing in North America in the 2024-25 season.
Tappara, Helenius’ Finnish team in Liiga, announced Monday on its social media platforms the center has left to join the Sabres organization.
Helenius, the 14th overall pick June 28, signed his entry-level NHL contract July 8.
He will likely be ticketed for the Rochester Americans, the Sabres’ AHL affiliate. But having thrived for two seasons against stronger and more experienced talent with Jukurit, his first Liiga team, he could compete for a spot in Buffalo out of training camp or be in line for an early recall.
He registered 47 points for Jukurit, the second-highest total by a Liiga player before his 18th birthday. Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, one of the NHL’s best all-around players, owns the record.
Last season, Helenius scored 14 goals and 36 points in 51 games and added two goals and six points in six playoff contests.
Over the final three postseason games, Olli Jokinen, Jukurit’s former coach, told the Times Herald that Helenius “was our best player.”
