Carolina Hurricanes free agent defenseman Tony DeAngelo is still without a contract for this upcoming NHL season, but reports are DeAngelo could be heading overseas to Russia.

First reported by the Hockey News Hub on X, DeAngelo could be joining SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. DeAngelo, 28, signed a 1 year contract to rejoin the Hurricanes prior to last season after being bought out by the Philadelphia Flyers. DeAngelo appeared in 31 games last season for the Carolina Hurricanes, scoring 3 goals and 11 points. DeAngelo also appeared in 9 games for the Hurricanes in the playoffs adding 2 assists.

Over DeAngelo’s 8 year NHL career he has often been a polarizing figure. During the 2020 presidential election season DeAngelo drew some attention on himself for political tweets as well as some controversial tweets during the Covid-19 pandemic.

DeAngelo was also involved in a post-game confrontation with Alexandar Georgiev when the two were teammates with the New York Rangers. On January 30th in 2021 following a OT loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, DeAngelo and Georgiev reportedly got into a confrontation as they headed town the tunnel. The exchange led to the Rangers parting ways with DeAngelo.

If indeed this the end of DeAngelo’s time in the NHL, DeAngelo heads overseas with having played in 371 games compiling 48 goals, 162 assists and 210 points.

DeAngelo’s representation did not respond for comment.
