The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent veteran linebacker Shaquille Quarterman, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Quarterman previously participated in the Eagles’ rookie minicamp back in May on a tryout basis.
The 26-year-old linebacker lacks extensive experience playing on defense; he’s mostly been a special teams contributor thus far in his career. Case in point, check out these snap counts from Pro Football Reference:
2020 — 0% defense, 62% special teams
2021 — 13% defense, 51% special teams
2022 — 2% defense, 67% special teams
2023 — 1% defense, 51% special teams
One would think the Eagles signing Quarterman might be related to Oren Burks being injured. Burks, who is dealing with a knee injury, hasn’t participated in training camp since the team’s first practice back on July 24. It remains to be seen when he’ll be able to return.
At the very least, Quarterman gives the Eagles more linebacker depth. He can help to fill training camp practice reps and preseason game snaps. If he really shines on special teams, perhaps he can convince the Eagles to keep him around. He’s less likely to be on the roster, of course, but maybe he finds a home on the practice squad.
