There are only so many restricted free agents still hanging out there without a new deal, and even fewer who will land the type of massive contract that Seth Jarvis is in line for from the Carolina Hurricanes. He is, in fact, one of our Top 3 RFAs remaining, by projected contract value.
And according to the latest reports out of Raleigh, “real momentum” is being made on a new rich extension for the Canes’ breakout forward. And while projections from AFP Analytics had pegged Jarvis at a $7.75 million AAV on a long-term pact, Canes Corner podcast host Adam Gold says that the 22-year-old former first-rounder will actually top the $8 million AAV mark on the deal.
My understanding is that the two sides are actively engaged in contract talks and both sides want the same thing – they both want an eight year deal. Where we are now at a sticking point is where that (AAV) number will ultimately be at. My understanding right now is that the number is north of 8.
Gold adds that it appears that the team has moved more in the talks than the Jarvis camp has. He even suggests that the number could top $8.5M AAV, while adding that Jarvis’s long-term potential is quite possibly worthy of that kind of number.
The 13th overall pick in the 2020 Draft just completed his 3rd NHL season, and registered 33 goals, essentially double his previous high, 34 assists and 67 points, also both career bests. And he even threw his 5’10”, 175-pound body around like never before, to the tune of 115 hits, 42 more than the previous season. He also recorded an impressive plus/minus of +23.
A big raise is coming for Jarvis, and he appears poised to rocket past the projections.
