It was a “Swede” celebration for several Pittsburgh Penguins players this past weekend.
Penguins’ defenseman Marcus Pettersson tied the knot back home in Sweden, and most of the Swedish players on the current roster – in addition to a familiar former Penguin – showed up. This included the likes of defenseman Erik Karlsson, winger Rickard Rakell, goaltender Magnus Hellberg, and former Penguin and cult hero Patric Hornqvist.
Even non-Swede teammate Drew O’Connor traversed the Atlantic to make an appearance:
Rakell, a good friend of Pettersson’s, was a groomsman in the wedding.
Pettersson has emerged as one of the NHL’s top defensive defenseman and has solidified his place in Pittsburgh’s top-4 alongside Karlsson. He held his own on offense in 2023-24 as well, registering 30 points, eight power play points, and this no-look, game-winning snipe on January 27 against the Montreal Canadiens:
Pettersson and Karlsson also helped Sweden bring home the bronze medal at this year’s IIHF World Championship.
Karlsson will again square off against the world’s best during the 4 Nations Face-off Tournament in February 2025. Six players have already been named to each of the four rosters for Sweden, Canada, Finland, and The United States.
It remains to be seen whether or not Pettersson, Rakell, or Hellberg will be joining their teammate as part of the final roster.
