Albeit a rainy one, Thursday morning played host to the summer’s second outing of Carolina Panthers training camp.
Here are the top takeaways and observations from the practice:

Tight end Tommy Tremble, who could be on the verge of a breakout campaign here in 2024, was sidelined on Thursday. Head coach Dave Canales offered up some reasoning for the decision.
“Tommy, we had to shut Tommy down,” Canales said. “He was startin’ to experience some tightness in his hamstring, so we wanted to make sure we get ahead of it. Instead of trying to nurse him through a bunch of days, let’s get him really healthy and let’s have him come back to us the way we know he can be.”

When will we find out the winner of the team’s kicker competition between veteran Eddy Piñeiro and undrafted rookie Harrison Mevis? Well, according to Canales, you might want to strap in.
“I learned this from Pete [Carroll]—don’t make a decision until the last possible time that you have to so you can just keep gathering information,” he said. “The evaluation process continues. So I’d like to drag that out as long as possible.”
Piñeiro nailed all five of his tries on Wednesday while Mevis went four-for-five this morning.

On Wednesday, Canales was clear about who the offense’s go-to guy will be. That guy spoke about the endorsement this morning.
“It’s great to have him [Canales] say that,” Diontae Johnson said. “My work speaks for itself. I’m gonna continue to work and get my teammates better all around, and just continue to bring my best effort and my best attitude each and every day.”

It may be take an entire offseason’s worth of time, but quarterback Bryce Young spoke about getting Canales’ quick-hitting offense down.
“Yeah, just take the coaching and understanding what our philosophy is, what we’re trying to do,” he said of the “2.7 seconds or less” approach. “But one part—what Coach Canales and all the coaches say—is making sure that that be our mindset, but we’re able to play free and we’re able to react.”
