The New Orleans Saints multiple veteran leaders defensively. Demario Davis may headline the group, but Tyrann Mathieu is certainly in that discussion as well. Mathieu is a three-time first-team All-Pro.
Even in his 30s, Mathieu is still an impressive safety. Some people around the league have seemingly forgotten about him, though.
Via ESPN, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler broke down a survey given to league executives, coaches, and scouts. That survey ranks top 10 players at different positions. Check out his description for how they come to their rankings below.
With 2024 NFL training camps on the horizon, it is again time for the league’s true insiders to make their voices heard. ESPN surveyed league executives, coaches and scouts to help us rank the top 10 players at 11 different positions, from quarterback to cornerback and all positions in between. This is the fifth edition of these rankings, and as usual, several players have moved up or fallen off last year’s lists.
Tyrann Mathieu snubbed from top 10 safety rankings
Mathieu was not included in the top ten, nor did he get an invite to the honorable mentions. In fact, Mathieu somehow did not even receive a single vote from coaches, executives, or scouts from around the NFL.
If you don’t consider the veteran a top ten safety anymore, that’s one thing. Undermining him completely in a group of over twenty safeties, that is a completely different story for Mathieu. He may be one of the oldest starting safeties in football, but he totaled 75 tackles and four interceptions in 2023.
Mathieu even recorded an elite grade via Pro Football Focus with an 81.3 last season.
That was his highest grade since 2015. Not to mention, 2022 was another strong campaign as he received an 81.2 grade. He’s been consistently solid for New Orleans, even in some disappointing seasons for the team, in totality.
No matter the way you slice it – these folks from around the league absolutely overlooked The Honey Badger.
