Kelly Bensimon thinks she is “better off” since ending her engagement to Scott Litner just days ahead of their wedding — but admitted she’s saddened their relationship dissolved.
“I’m obviously extremely disappointed, but it’s not something that just happened,” she recently told the Daily Mail at Daily Front Row’s Most Stylish Party event in the Hamptons.
The “Real Housewives of New York City” alum, 56, said she decided to call it quits because Litner refused to sign a prenuptial agreement.
“It’s like when you’re a single parent, whether you have thousands in your account or you have a 100 million in your account, women are going to need to protect themselves, and I’m just not going to take a risk,” she explained.
“It’s about having personal respect and value, which I have,” she added.
“I’m raising two girls, who are really important to me. But the prenup is really important because it talks about more than just your own personal value.”
Bensimon shares two daughters, Sea Bensimon, 26, and Teddy Bensimon, 24, with her ex-husband, Gilles Bensimon.
They were married between 1997 and 2007.
In addition to feeling “better off” since becoming single, the former reality star said her friends have noticed a difference in her “tone.”
She also said she has connected with “so many women who have gone through similar situations.”
Bensimon and Litner, a private wealth manager, got engaged last year during a Fourth of July vacation to Lake Geneva, Wis., which is near where she grew up.
They were expected to walk down the aisle in Boston on June 29.
However, Bensimon called off their nuptials four days ahead of the ceremony.
At the time, she told Page Six she decided her two daughters were her “priority.”
Litner has been married twice before and has three kids.
