New Orleans Saints’ roster bubble candidate makes a perfect impression to start training camp

The kicker position is an intriguing one for the New Orleans Saints in 2024. Last year’s starter in Blake Grupe is standing out already at training camp. That’s worth monitoring for fans of the black and gold.

Saints kicker Blake Grupe goes perfect during first day of practice

As Johnson notes above, the attempts were all relatively short. That being said, Grupe actually missed two field goal attempts of less than 30 years last season. They were not automatic then, but they were in practice today.

As for kicks from 30-39 yards, he was perfect in 2023. He was 8-10 on attempts in the 40-49 yard range.

I listed Grupe as a Saints player with the most to lose in 2024 earlier this month. There’s plenty of pressure on the young boot to perform with young Charlie Smyth nipping at his heels.

Grupe had a rollercoaster of a rookie year. That’s completely normal. The normalcy does not stop doubt from fans, though. Heading into year two, the Saints have Charlie Smyth behind Grupe, battling for the starting role as New Orleans’ kicker.

Grupe had some early struggles in 2024, but his overall season was better than some fans may have believed while it was going on.

A big missed kick against the Green Bay Packers in crunch time stands out, but that was included with those early issues for Grupe. You can argue that he was a top ten kicker in football during the second half of 2023.

Former Saints kicker Wil Lutz had struggles as a rookie but became a solid boot for New Orleans after that season. For Grupe, he may do the same. The first half of 2023 saw the most struggles for him, while the back half sound more success. The young kicker did make some franchise history in 2023, too. The campaign had its ups and downs, but he joined Lutz on a prestigious list.

We will see if Grupe can continue his success throughout the rest of training camp. Not to mention, we’ll see Smyth get some opportunities as well. Keep up to date on an important position battle for the Saints here.
