The New Orleans Saints are bringing back a familiar wide receiver for the 2024 season. The move came as they released an injured tight end.
The Saints have had their share of troubling injury news in training camp. They also have a quarterback battling cancer this summer.
The New Orleans Saints signed a familiar WR
Per a statement by the Saints on Thursday, the team is signing Marquez Callaway:
Callaway, 6-2, 204, was originally signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2020 out of Tennessee and in 45 regular season games with 17 starts for New Orleans (2020-23), he has recorded career totals of 83 receptions for 1,069 yards with seven touchdowns, returned 14 punts for 149 yards (10.6 avg.) and returned four kickoffs for 94 yards (23.5 avg.).
Callaway earned a roster spot as a rookie in 2020 and caught 21 passes for 213 yards, returned 11 punts for 122 yards (11.1 avg.) and returned four kickoffs for 94 yards in 11 games with three starts.
In 2021, he led New Orleans in receiving yards and touchdown grabs, when he posted 46 receptions for 698 yards (15.2 avg.) with six touchdowns. After four seasons with New Orleans, the Warner Robins, Ga. native spent the offseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers before re-joining the club.
In a corresponding move, the team released tight end Tommy Hudson.
The Pittsburgh Steelers released Marquez Callaway this week
Callaway was unable to make a splash with the Steelers in training camp in July. The Steelers released Callaway this week, even though the receiver corps is one of the team’s weakest units. Many Steelers fans were hoping the team would keep Callaway and were upset with the news he was released.
The Saints are hoping Callaway will perform better in New Orleans this month.
