According to Puck Pedia, the Toronto Maple Leafs have made another questionable move as recent signing defenseman Jani Hakanpaa has not been registered as contract.
In the early days of free agency, it was reported that Maple Leafs had signed Hakanpaa to a two-year deal worth $3,000,000 holding a value of 1.5 million per season. Days after the signing, reports surfaced that Hakanpaa is suffering from a knee injury that may keep him out of the lineup for most of the year as he is unable to skate.
It’s been said that he has a degenerative knee condition that has left him bone on bone with no cartilage in his knee to help stabilize his skating. This kind of the issue is not unfamiliar for the Maple Leafs as general manager Brad Treliving took a chance on another Dallas defenseman in John Klingberg.
Klingberg had double hip surgery and the Maple Leafs felt that he could be a contributor to their power play and a key point shot. But as expected as the season began to ramp up, Klingberg couldn’t finish the season and required another surgery in early spring.
It seems the Maple Leafs have not learned their lesson and even with the upside of both players and what they have contributed over the past couple of years, it’s safe to say that there’s no reason to take these chances as there are plenty of other defensemen in the NHL that can fulfill their role.
It remains to be seen on how this will all play out for the Maple Leafs but in the end it’s likely they will walk away from this contract.
