The Tampa Bay Lightning have had an incredibly busy offseason. They certainly made some big decisions along the way, like letting franchise legend Steven Stamkos walk, trading Mikhail Sergachev, and signing Jake Guentzel.
While the Lightning have made some massive moves, they also made some depth signings who have the potential to be impactful. One specific example is forward Jesse Ylonen.
On July 1, the Lightning quietly signed Ylonen to a one-year, $775,000 contract. The 2018 second-round pick did not receive a qualifying offer from the Montreal Canadiens, making him an unrestricted free agent. As a result, the Lightning had the chance to scoop him up.
Ylonen had a quiet year for the Canadiens in 2023-24, posting four goals, eight points, and a plus-2 rating in 59 games. While it was not the best campaign for Ylonen, he has shown in the past that he has the potential to provide decent secondary offensive production. Just back in 2022-23 with the Habs, he had six goals and 16 points in 37 games.
At just 24 years old, Ylonen can still get his numbers back up. Perhaps joining a strong offensive team like the Lightning could even help the once-top prospect take another step forward in his development.
In addition, besides having offensive potential, Ylonen also has experience killing penalties. Due to this, he could be a sneaky good two-way forward for the Bolts in 2024-25. If he regains his offensive touch and makes an impact in the Canadiens’ bottom six, he could be a steal of the signing for the Lightning.
