The Tampa Bay Lightning have had a very busy offseason, but they should not be done just yet. When looking at their roster, it is clear that they could use one more winger before the start of the season.
After signing defenseman J.J. Moser, the Lightning have limited cap space, so they are not in a position to acquire a pricey winger like Nikolaj Ehlers, Patrik Laine, or Martin Necas. However, they can go bargain shopping, and the Los Angeles Kings offer a very intriguing forward: Arthur Kaliyev.
Kaliyev, 23, has been the subject of trade rumors since the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, but he remains in LA. While this is the case, this is expected to change, as he wants a change of scenery, and the Kings are willing to find him one.
Kaliyev struggled this past season for the Kings, as he had seven goals, 15 points, and a minus-1 rating in 51 games. He was also scratched several times, including during the entirety of the Kings’ short playoff run. While this was the case, he is a clear bounce-back candidate heading into the 2024-25 season.
Just back in 2022-23, Kaliyev showed that he has the potential to be a solid middle-six forward. In 56 games for the Kings that campaign, he posted 13 goals and 28 points. With numbers like these, he has the tools to become a solid goal-scorer. When noting that he is only 23 years old, he could even still have time to improve.
Nevertheless, with the Lightning needing a boost in their middle six, they should try to acquire Kaliyev. He would be a nice piece to their roster if he bounces back. The Lightning would likely need to start a potential trade with a mid-round pick and a prospect.
