Leon Draisaitl about to ink the richest contract in NHL history?

Leon Draisaitl is on the brink of signing the richest contract in NHL history, further solidifying his place among the league’s elite.Leon Draisaitl

The Edmonton Oilers superstar has become a cornerstone of the franchise, consistently demonstrating his value on the ice and in the locker room. With contract extension talks progressing well, Draisaitl is reportedly willing to take a slight discount to remain in Edmonton, a testament to his commitment to the team and its pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

Draisaitl’s current deal, which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $8.5 million, was signed in 2017 and has proven to be one of the most team-friendly contracts given his performance. Over the past few seasons, Draisaitl has consistently ranked among the league’s top scorers, showcasing his ability to dominate games with his playmaking, scoring, and physical presence. In the 2022-23 season, Draisaitl recorded 52 goals and 76 assists for 128 points in 80 games, solidifying his status as one of the NHL’s most prolific players. His performance in the playoffs was equally impressive, where he added 13 goals and five assists in just 12 games.

Given his production and rising salary cap, Draisaitl is well-positioned to command a historic contract. Reports suggest that his camp initially floated the idea of a $14.5 million AAV, which would have easily made him the highest-paid player in the league. However, in a move that highlights his loyalty to the Oilers, Draisaitl is willing to accept a slightly lower figure, with estimates indicating an eight-year deal worth between $13.3 million and $13.5 million AAV.

This potential contract would surpass the highest AAV in the NHL, held by Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, who signed an eight-year, $12.6 million AAV deal in 2022. Draisaitl’s willingness to take less than the maximum possible amount underscores his desire to keep the Oilers competitive, allowing the team more flexibility to build around him and Connor McDavid, the team’s other superstar due for a contract extension shortly.

Securing Draisaitl long-term at this figure would set a new standard for NHL contracts and ensure that the Oilers remain formidable in the league for years to come. The German-born forward has already etched his name into the history books with his on-ice achievements, and this upcoming contract will be another milestone in a career that shows no signs of slowing down.
