Kim Gordon name-dropped Taylor Swift when asked for her “most controversial pop culture opinion” in an interview published earlier this week.
The Sonic Youth legend told The Guardian that although she doesn’t know if it’s “controversial,” she declared she’s “not really a fan” of the “Folklore” singer-songwriter.
“I couldn’t tell you what her music sounded like, actually,” Gordon said. “When it comes to pop icons, I would choose Billie Eilish.”
While Gordon has admitted she’s light on Swift facts, she told Wallpaper last year that she sensed the singer’s “initial appeal” is that she seems to be an “approachable” person.
“So by writing lyrics about her ex-boyfriends, or break-ups, or whatever, [she] is her using vulnerability [in an intentional way],” she told the magazine last August.
Gordon, in an interview with The Guardian back in February, said she was journalling “just like Taylor Swift” at the time when asked about her own lyrics.
“But you know, I’m not writing about sad things,” Gordon noted.
“Well I guess a little sad. There is something about that kind of writing that’s powerful. It’s something you can do right now.”
The Sonic Youth rocker later weighed in on whether she’d open for Swift, although she expressed uncertainty over whether her audience would like it.
“It has to be a little bit of a fit,” she said.
She continued, “Even when Sonic Youth toured with Neil Young, it was really hard, seeing hippies sitting there giving you the finger. Also, I couldn’t tell you what her music sounds like, but I was on a plane with all her fans recently on the way to Utah and they were all wearing merch. That I quite like. I think I’d just take a sweatshirt.”
