I guess Ozempic doesn’t work for everybody. Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kandi Burruss tried the trendy weight-loss drug after seeing it work for some of her castmates. But sadly, it didn’t do anything for her.
“I saw so many people who were trying it and losing weight,” said the singer/songwriter. She added that she knew a “ton” of women who lost weight successfully on the drug, including former RHOA cast member Marlo Hampton.
“So I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to try this,’” Kandi said. “[But] I didn’t lose any weight.”
Ozempic just didn’t have the desired effect
The Grammy winner confessed to using the drug “last year.” When she wasn’t getting the results she wanted, friends who had used the drug thought “something must be wrong” or that she simply needed to take a “higher dosage.” Even Kandi’s doctor was confused.
“My doctor was like, ‘I don’t know what the problem is, I’m not seeing this in other people,’” she remembered.
In case you live under a rock, Ozempic is an FDA-approved drug originally developed for patients with Type II diabetes. The drug “tricks” the brain into thinking that you’re not hungry, suppressing the appetite and promoting weight loss. Unfortunately, Kandi didn’t see any change in her appetite.
“It didn’t curb my appetite,” she explained. “I know some people are like, ‘Oh, I can’t eat.’ Not me! I was eating appetizers, a regular meal, and dessert, OK? It didn’t stop anything for me.”
The long list of public figures who have lost weight using Ozempic includes Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Clarkson, and Real Housewives of New Jersey stars Dolores Catania and Margaret Josephs.
“When you see it worked for other people and it doesn’t work for you, it makes you depressed,” Kandi shared. “It makes you feel like, ‘What is wrong? Why is it not working for me?’”
Weight gain followed RHOA exit
The Bedroom Kandi founder admitted to gaining significant weight after leaving RHOA in 2023. “I was eating good, living good,” she said. “I was already 10 pounds over my desired weight at the top of the year. But then, when I announced that I was not going to do ‘Housewives’ anymore, I was eating dessert every day, taking trips, just living it up.”
“Before I knew it, I was like 170-something pounds,” she added. “And it was not cute.”
Since changing her eating habits and switching to another weight-loss product, she’s starting to get results. “I’m feeling good,” she says.
“While I’m on tour,” she shared, “I’m going to make the most of the gyms at the hotels … I’m going to work out so many days a week, stick to eating correctly, and … see how it goes. So I’m excited. Pray for that I can stick to it!”
“It has been years since I felt like I was real slim and trim,” the Xscape singer concluded. “It’s been a minute, and I would love to just see myself get back to that, to my best self.”
