The closing ceremony for the Paris Olympics isn’t until Sunday, but the NFL is already touting a new sport at the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
Men’s and women’s flag football, along with baseball, cricket, lacrosse, softball and squash, will be joining the lineup at the next Summer Olympics after not appearing on the Paris schedule.
In an NFL promo released on Monday, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts slings a fiery football to the top of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to light its Olympic cauldron. The former Alabama QB then says, “It’s our turn.”
The coliseum was the site of Olympic competition in 1932 and 1984 and was briefly known as Olympic Stadium during the 1932 Games.
Could Hurts really throw the football that far? The Olympic cauldron is about 50 yards above the ground.
Since the addition of flag football was announced in 2023, several NFL players have expressed interest in playing for the United States at the Los Angeles Games, including Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
The announcement prompted Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, a former West Alabama standout, to post on social media: “Calling all NFL guys. Let’s bring one home.”
While it remains to be seen if NFL teams would allow their players to participate, the dates for the Los Angeles Games – July 14-30, 2028 – would work with the current NFL calendar.
