Former Capitals Defenseman Plays In ‘World’s Highest Hockey Game’ In The Swiss Mountains Almost 3,500 Meters Above Sea Level

Several NHLers took part in the game, including former Capitals blueliner Jonas Siegenthaler.

Getting to Know... Jonas Siegenthaler

This past week, it was proven in Switzerland that hockey can be played just about anywhere, as former Washington Capitals defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler and more Swiss players took to the mountains for the “World’s Highest Hockey Game.”

Siegenthaler, along with the likes of Nino Niederreiter, Nico Hischier and more familiar NHL names, along with players from SC Bern, played in the highest accessible point in Europe: the top of Jungfraujoch, a saddle in the Bernese Alps that sits 4,545 meters above sea level.

Siegenthaler’s team won the unconventional outdoor hockey game 6-5 as the Bernese Alps served as an admirable backdrop.

The game took place on synthetic ice, with players skating on SHARKBLADES, which are synthetic skate blades that are used off-ice and made with ball bearings to provide sharpness and an on-ice feel.

Siegenthaler, a 2015 second-round draft pick, spent the first years of his career with the Capitals before being traded to the New Jersey Devils during the 2020-21 season.
