Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey has further embraced the comparisons to current Flyers forward Travis Konecny, praising Konecny’s game during his postgame media availability during the World Junior Summer Showcase, following Canada’s thrilling 8-6 win over Finland.
Barkey picked up two assists during the match.
The 19-year-old has drawn comparisons to Konecny since he was first drafted to the Flyers in 2023, particularly in terms of size and offensive impact.
The similarities are so uncanny that Barkey revealed that London Knights teammate and fellow Flyers prospect Oliver Bonk gave him the nickname “TK Jr.” last year, and the moniker quickly caught on with teammates and even the Flyers development camp coaches.
He doesn’t mind the comparisons, though, saying that he “loves” watching Konecny play.
“He’s a rat out there,” Barkey stated, referencing Konecny’s well-known tendencies to aggravate opposing players. “I love that.”
Barkey also talked about how being a smaller guy has motivated him to “not take the next few games lightly” and that he’s aware that in order to make Canada’s World Junior Championship team, he’ll have to “earn everything” he gets.
“[I’m] just making sure I’m doing my best and making the most of every opportunity I get,” he said. “[I’m] trying to make the best impression I can.”
