In my ongoing analysis covering the Edmonton Oilers’ roster performances, today we spotlight Adam Erne’s tenure during the 2023-24 NHL season. As one of the later additions to the team, Erne’s season painted a picture of a player utilized sparingly yet pivotal in certain aspects.
Signed initially on a professional tryout basis, Erne secured a one-year contract with the Oilers on October 13. Over the course of the season, he participated in 24 games, mostly distributed evenly between October and January.
During these appearances, Erne was clocking in an average of about 7.5 minutes of ice time per game in 5-on-5 situations. His stats sheet was modest, tallying one goal and one assist.
Erne’s role was primarily as a physical player on the ice; however, the outcomes during his shifts weren’t particularly encouraging. The Oilers struggled with their 5-on-5 shot attempt and expected goal share while he was on the ice. On a positive note, they did break even on scoring chance share and, crucially, maintained a balanced actual goal share, which is particularly significant coming from a bottom-six forward group.
Post his NHL stint, Erne spent a considerable portion of the season with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, where he produced six goals and amassed 12 points across 36 games.
As of this summer, Erne remains unsigned. His future prospects might involve seeking another professional tryout, considering a minor league contract, or even relocating overseas to continue his career in Europe.
Through his career, spanning from his time in USHL with Indiana Ice to various NHL teams including Tampa Bay Lightning and Detroit Red Wings, Erne has been a journeyman. Notably, he has accumulated a total of 379 NHL game appearances, contributing 41 goals and 50 assists. His playoff experience is limited, reflecting the often sporadic nature of his tenure at the highest levels of professional hockey.
