Eagles claim former Jets tight end off waivers

Well, it didn’t take long for the Philadelphia Eagles to address their tight end depth after they waived/injured McCallen Castles earlier on Saturday.

Eagles claim former Jets tight end off waivers - Bleeding Green Nation

The Birds claimed undrafted rookie Kevin Foelsch off waivers from the New York Jets, according to an official announcement.

For those wondering, there is no relation to Nick Foles.

Foelsch is a Ramsey, New Jersey native who played college football at the University of New Haven (Division II). Here’s a look at his college stats:

Foelsch originally signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted rookie free agent but was quickly waived. He then participated in the Jets’ rookie minicamp as a tryout player. He apparently impressed enough to earn a spot on their 90-man roster. But not enough to avoid getting cut recently.

Here’s a clip from a scouting report on Foelsch from our friends over at Gang Green Nation:

Based on his highlights, Foelsch is as dominant as you’d like to see for any player who was at the Division II level, but now making the leap to the NFL. However, his statistical production wasn’t that impressive.

Maybe this is just because he was stuck on a team that didn’t pass much, or he was held back by substandard quarterback play, though. It could be a sign of a good team-first attitude that he contributed in other ways, but he’ll need to make the most of any opportunities he gets with the Jets to prove that he has some untapped potential.

Foelsch is a clearly long-shot to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster. That being said, there does seem to be an open competition for the third spot behind Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra. If Foelsch can step up, that spot could be his. Or perhaps he can earn a spot on the practice squad.
