The Houston Texans are continuing to make their roster as good as it can get. Even with training camp already underway, the Texans have already signed more players like Cam Akers and Quintez Cephus.
As of right now, during training camp, they can have up to 90 players on their roster, but sometime before Week 1 of the regular season, they have to cut that down to 53 and have a 16-man practice squad.
The roster is pretty stacked as things stand. There aren’t a ton of position groups that have any more room for guys who are on the bubble side of the roster. Sure, the Texans will bring in undrafted free agents and players of that sort, but that’s because you never really know how good those guys can be.
But, for the guys who are competing for a roster spot, you do have a chance.
“When it comes to my message to our entire team, when it comes to competing, I reminded the guys of this yesterday, that never forget that training camp, is all about competition. Nobody is guaranteed a spot on a team. Everybody has to work for it and that’s what I truly believe,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said at training camp.
“And when you work for something, it means more. And you really earn what you get. So, we’ve got a lot of really talented players who are giving their best to compete. And whether guys make our team or not, I want our guys to make the NFL. I want our guys to be able to support their families, doing what they love doing.”
The Texans already had a pretty good roster before this offseason kicked off. Of course, there were holes, but most of them were filled after free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft. Nick Caserio has done one hell of a job this offseason, just when everyone had been doubting him.
So, for the roster spots that are up for grabs and battles to be had, this is the perfect time to show you deserve it. Ryans has the perfect message for those guys at camp.
