The Chicago Cubs added further pitching depth Wednesday signing Lucas Luetge to a minor-league deal. The veteran reliever was recently released by the Boston Red Sox. He last appeared at the big-league level for the Atlanta Braves in 2023.
Luetge is the Cubs’ latest finds on the open market after the club signed Adrian Houser on Tuesday. The left-hander comes to the organization after posting solid numbers for Triple-A Worchester in 2024. Luetge logged a 3.01 ERA for the Red Sox’ affiliate, something he’ll look to continue with Triple-A Iowa.
Signing Luetge is another buy-low scenario for the Cubs. If they can get any production from him, it’s a win.
Not too long ago, the lefty had solid seasons with the New York Yankees from 2021 to 2022. Before that, he spent time with the Seattle Mariners to start his career back in 2012.
The Cubs have previously found diamonds in the rough. Adding Jorge Lopez and Tyson Miller has bolstered their bullpen — a testament to the scouting department.
It’s interesting to see how many players the Cubs are bringing into the fold. Christian Bethancourt has been impressive behind the plate and David Bote has been serviceable in his return to the big-league team.
The Cubs still need to invest in better talent, but there’s no denying they have a knack for finding quality production from an unlikely cast of characters.
