Jacob Bertrand expressed an interest in joining his Cobra Kai co-star Xolo Maridueña, who plays Blue Beetle, in James Gunn’s DC Universe. While 2023 was the roughest year ever for the DCEU timeline, the franchise is getting replaced by a new DC Universe, led by Gunn and Peter Safran, as part of DC Studios. With several TV shows and movies in the works, a new era of DC will allow DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery a fresh shot at an interconnected universe.
Screen Rant recently chatted with Bertrand, who plays fan-favorite Hawk on Netflix’s Cobra Kai, to promote the final season. While chatting about the end of the series, Bertrand was asked whether or not he has been poking Maridueña to try and get him a DC Universe role, to which he said the following:
No, I haven’t quite yet. I would need to get my knowledge up on superheroes first. I was never the biggest comic book kid growing up. Xolo really is the person that made that happen, though. Even when I first met him, he was constantly saying, “That’s my dream role. I want to play Blue Beetle, I want to play Blue Beetle.” So, kudos to him, he found the thing he was super passionate about and got to play it. You know what, if that ever happened, I would have to play a villain. I would love to be the one trying to kill Blue Beetle. I think that’d be funny. [Chuckles]
How Jacob Bertrand Could Join The DCU
While the Blue Beetle movie didn’t perform at the box office, the adventures of Jaime Reyes are far from over. Despite being developed prior to the new DC Universe, Gunn confirmed that Maridueña’s iteration of Blue Beetle would continue as part of his new franchise. Even though Blue Beetle 2 is not happening, there is a different project coming that Bertland could be part of, allowing the Cobra Kai stars to be reunited.
A Blue Beetle animated TV show is currently in development as part of the DC Universe, with Miguel Puga as the showrunner while Cristian Martinez is attached to direct. While Gunn hasn’t addressed the Blue Beetle show yet, the animated series could have Bertrand voice a character from the DC lore who then goes to show up in other DC Universe movies and TV shows. Since DC Studios has established that an actor who plays a character in animation will also play their live-action counterpart, the new Blue Beetle show could be a solid beginning for Bertrand.
Even though it may not have been a financial success, Blue Beetle was one of the stronger projects to come out of the previous DC regime in 2023. That is why it will be exciting to see how the Blue Beetle characters fit into the larger DC Universe. Hopefully, Gunn and DC Studios will give new updates on the Blue Beetle TV show sooner rather than later.
Cobra Kai season 6, part 2 debuts on November 15, while part 3 will premiere in 2025.
