Iowa is riding a long losing streak. The rest of the minor league affiliates are hot.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were excommunicated by the St. Paul Saints (Twins), 11-0. It was the I-Cubs’ eighth-straight loss.
Starter Trey Supak allowed a home run in each of the first three innings. Two of them were hit by Yunior Severino. The final line on Supak was six runs on eight hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Daniel Palencia threw two scoreless innings of relief if you’re looking for a bright spot. Palencia gave up no hits as well. He walked one and hit one batter while striking out three.
DH Moises Ballesteros was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies walloped the Mississippi Braves, 13-0.
Jimmy Endersby threw the first four innings, allowing just two hits. He struck out six and walked no one.
The win went to Joe Nahas, who pitched the next two innings, retiring all six batters he faced. He struck out four of them.
The Smokies jumped out to a 10-0 lead with two runs in the first and eight in the third.
Shortstop Matt Shaw was 4 for 5 with a walk and three runs scored.
Center fielder Kevin Alcántara was 3 for 5 with a walk. Alcántara scored one run and drove in one.
Right fielder Felix Stevens went 2 for 5 with a walk and a two-run double in the third. He had three total RBI and scored once.
Catcher William Simoneit was 2 for 6 with a two-run double that came back-to-back with Stevens’ two-run double. He scored once.
Left fielder Christian Franklin went 1 for 3 with three walks. He scored twice and drove home one.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs defanged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 5-1.
Drew Gray pitched the best game of his professional career, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. He walked two and struck out four.
Gray was in line for his first pro win, but reliever Nick Hull gave up a game-tying solo home run in the sixth inning. Hull got the win after South Bend scored twice in the top of the seventh. Hull’s final line was one run on two hits over 2.2 innings. Hull walked one and struck out four. He also hit two batters.
Mitchell Tyranski threw the final 1.1 innings and claimed the save after not giving up a run or a hit. He did walk one and struck out no one.
Shortstop Ed Howard hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, which broke the 1-1 tie and gave South Bend the lead for good. It was his second on the season. Howard was 1 for 4.
First baseman Brian Kalmer doubled and tripled in a 2 for 3 game. He also left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the ninth inning. Kalmer scored once.
Third baseman Pedro Ramirez was 2 for 5.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles), 7-2. It was the Pelicans’ seventh-straight win.
Nazier Mulé started and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits along the way. Mulé walked three and struck out three.
Francis Reynoso relieved Mulé and got the win because Mulé didn’t go five innings. Reynoso pitched 2.1 innings without allowing a hit or a run. He struck out four and walked one.
The Pelicans scored twice in the first inning and five times in the second. They only managed one hit after that, but those seven runs were enough.
Shortstop Cristian Hernandez hit a three-run home run in the second inning. It was his fifth on the year. Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored twice.
Center fielder Alfonsin Rosario was a perfect 2 for 2 with a double and three walks. Rosario also stole a base. He had one run batted in.
