BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Sabres Hall of Famer Danny Gare is joining Buffalo’s Walk to Defeat ALS.

On August 3, The ALS Foundation is hosting a walk to support Western New Yorkers living with ALS. The event takes place at Delaware Park, at the corner of Meadow Dr and Park Rd, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the walk starting at 11 a.m.

Gare will sign autographs and take photos to raise awareness and money for research, programs, and patient care.

Otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a progressive motor neuron disease that gradually strips people of the ability to walk, talk, eat, and breathe. ALS has no known cause or cure.

The event will feature an Ice Bucket Challenge station to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the viral challenge that began in 2014.

Long-time nurse and US veteran, Renee Sylvies, will serve and speak as the Walk Ambassador. Colleague Julie Garland said Sylvies continues to help others despite her ALS diagnosis.

“Renee shared that when she was diagnosed her first thoughts were how she could use this diagnosis to help others,” said Garland. “Along with her team, she has been a supporter of our walks in the past and displayed a clear mission of supporting others living with ALS.”

Renee’s Rangers, Slyvies’ walk team has raised more than $9,000.

Funds raised through the event will go to care services, research, advocacy, and awareness. Last year the event raised more than $149,000 with nearly 550 participants.
