The couple announced their separation in February, and continue to co-parent their three-year-old son, Cruz
Things remain unsettled between Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor amid their separation.
The former Vanderpump Rules stars were both in attendance at the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 27 in Washington, D.C., and though they enjoyed the evening separately, Cartwright, 35, told PEOPLE that things aren’t hostile between them.
“We’re friendly,” she said of her dynamic with Taylor, 44, who she married in 2019 and announced her separation from in February.
She described the dynamic with a metaphor, saying she and Taylor are still in the “same hotel, different rooms.”
“That’s really all I want to say about him,” she admitted.
Cartwright announced the news of their separation after four years of marriage on an episode of their joint podcast, When Reality Hits, in February.
“Jax and I are taking time apart and I made the decision to move into another home to take some space for the sake of my mental health,” she said at the time.
She told PEOPLE at the premiere of their new Bravo show, The Valley, that she “really needed to step back from” the relationship.
“Once a woman hits her breaking point, it’s like ‘Done.’ Something like clicked in my head, and I was like. ‘I need to step away from this situation. This is not not healthy. This is not a good situation. My son deserves better. I deserve better,'” she said.
She also noted that her and Taylor’s three-year-old son, Cruz, is the “most important thing” to them both as they navigate their time apart.
“I feel a little bit of relief,” Cartwright admitted. “I needed this space.”
Taylor similarly remarked on how the separation was “best for [their] family” as he and Cartwright have “been going through some things for a while now.”
“We decided to take a little bit of a breather. I’m not sure what the future holds for this. But as of right now, this is just the best-case scenario, but this is not a publicity stunt,” he shared.
Co-parenting has been going well thus far for the pair, Cartwright told PEOPLE in early April.
“We’re doing a really good job going back and forth. And I’ll also take him to the house and play and we’ll swim one day or have him play on his play set and we’ll do different things,” she explained, adding that “the most important thing” is that they’re working well together on Cruz’s behalf.
“I think it’s honestly been better because we aren’t fighting in front of him. And for me, I think that’s what is most important, right now. Because that’s why I had to get him out of that situation in the first place.”
