Britney Spears is finally getting the biopic treatment.
Universal Pictures said it has secured the rights to a film based on the pop star’s best-selling 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” according to People.
The movie will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who helmed “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Wicked,” which comes out later this year.
Chu, 44, confirmed the news by reposting an article about the biopic on X.
Marc Platt is producing the film. Platt, 67, has produced “La La Land,” “Cruella,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Babylon,” “The Little Mermaid” and more. He’s also a producer on “Wicked.”
There haven’t been any casting announcements.
Spears, 42, teased the movie about her life on X on Monday.
“Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned,” she tweeted.
According to Variety, Universal won the rights to Spears’ book in a highly competitive auction.
The Ankler reported that the deal was worth eight figures and involved obtaining the rights to Spears’ music catalog.
Shonda Rhimes, Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B, and Margot Robbie were reportedly interested in the biopic. Sony, Warner Brothers, Fox, Disney and Netflix all allegedly vied to win the rights but lost to Universal.
“The Woman in Me,” which came out Oct. 23, 2023, has sold over 2.5 million copies in the US. It reached No. 1 on the New York Times Bestsellers list and became the fastest-selling audiobook in Simon & Schuster’s history.
Michelle Williams narrated the audiobook.
Spears’ memoir details her childhood, rise to fame, past romantic relationships with exes such as Justin Timberlake, conservatorship that was controlled by her estranged father Jamie Spears, and more.
One of the biggest bombshells from the book was Spears claiming that in 2000, when she was 19, she had an abortion while she was dating Timberlake.
The “Stronger” singer said she got the abortion because the “SexyBack” singer didn’t want to be a father.
“Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young,” she wrote.
Spears added: “I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby. I don’t know if that was the right decision.”
In 2022, Spears dismissed the idea of a biopic after “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown said she wanted to portray the Grammy winner in a future film.
“I hear about people wanting to do movies about my life … dude I’m not dead !!!” the “Crossroads” star wrote in an Instagram post.
Spears split from her husband, Sam Asghari, after writing her memoir. The exes were married from June 2022 to August 2023.
Spears’ tell-all only had complimentary words about Asghari, 30, including calling him a “gift from God.”
The “Everytime” singer also wrote of her then-husband, “I have an appreciation for how stable he is.”
