And we’re going to the top of that building right there.
Sam M. earned the first impression rose during the premiere of Jenn Tran’s season of The Bachelorette, but he might’ve tarnished that impression during his first one-on-one date with Jenn.
In a PEOPLE exclusive preview of the July 29 episode of The Bachelorette, Jenn, 26, and Sam M., 27, find themselves in New Zealand taking in views of Aukland from the Auckland SkyJump & SkyWalk. When an employee informs Jenn and Sam M. that they can walk around the building or jump off, the physician assistant student, decides, “A walk sounds lovely.”
But Sam M. had other plans. The contractor informs the staffer, “No, we would like to jump.”
Jenn didn’t like what she heard, explaining, “Without even asking me, he made a decision for the both of us. I think he needs to be doing a better job of reading my emotions right now.”
Sam M. felt differently. “I want her to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” he says in an on-camera interview.
Jenn didn’t think Sam M. picked up on how uncomfortable she actually felt.
“I am clearly terrified and Sam’s not reading my emotions at all,” she tells the cameras. “I feel like I’m up here all by myself.”
On the July 22 episode of The Bachelorette, Sam M. butted heads with Devin at the end of the group date.
“You say mutual respect, but you don’t believe that,” Devin, 28, said to Sam M.
Sam M. wanted nothing to do with Devin. “I don’t respect you,” he said to freight company owner. “I got nothing to say to you. We are not going to be friends.”
They fought again after Aaron departed and ominously warned Jenn about some of her remaining suitors potentially not being ready for an engagement at the end of the show.
“I don’t respect you, I don’t like you, I want nothing to do with this,” Sam M. reiterated to Devin.
Also during the episode, Sam N. shocked Jenn and the guys by declaring during the group date that he was falling in love with her. Thomas N., 31, called Sam N.’s declaration “intense” and “premature,” and Sam said that it “caught everybody off guard.”
“These are some big, big statements to be making so early on,” Jenn said in an on-camera interview. “It does feel very early, but it also feels kind of good because at the end of the day, I am here for love and to find my person.”
Before her season began, Jenn told PEOPLE that she didn’t want to get involved with the men’s drama.
“My approach with navigating drama was to let the boys fight it out themselves,” the reality star said. “I think once you let somebody figure things out for themselves and see how they make decisions and how they approach things, you get to learn so much more about them. So once drama started happening, I sat back and just took some mental notes. I’m not their moms, I’m not there to teach them anything.”
Ultimately, Jenn teased that she feels “very happy” with how her season ended.
“I’m very happy with the way everything panned out,” she said. “I learned so much every day that I was there [to find out] about myself and what I wanted in a relationship. There was so much growth.”
