Charity Lawson and Dotun Olubeko knew Dancing With the Stars would be difficult after The Bachelorette. However, she had no idea that the hate from DWTS fans would be so bad that she needed therapy to assist with her mental health. What did she have to say? Keep reading to find out more.
Charity Lawson Was Supported By Dotun Olubeko
Dotun made sure he supported the ABC star as she performed on the dance show. Actually, she’d gotten some advice on how difficult the show would be. Partnered with pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev, she came in 4th but felt a bit upset by the way the judges scored her performances. Now, the former Bachelorette opened up about the shocking amount of online bullying she experienced.
Charity Lawson felt the judges were too harsh, and she revealed much more while speaking on the Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast. Chatting with former DWTS pro-dancer, Cheryl Burke, Dotun Olubeko’s fiance admitted that the shocking bullying almost made her want to fail so she could escape the hate.
Dancing With The Stars Bullying & A Therapist
Dotun Olubeko’s wife-to-be is a therapist, so she probably recognized the need for a chat sooner than others might have. During the podcast, she told Cheryl Burke that she sent for “an on-set therapist ..after experiencing mental health struggles [during] Season 32.” Surprised that more people don’t do that, she admitted that things were bad. The Bachelorette lead added:
I literally went through hell and back with my mental health on that show. I came into the Dancing With the Stars fanbase like, ‘This is going to be a piece of cake,’ only to be…where it was so much worse than Bachelor and Bachelorette. I was getting death threats for existing.
Charity Lawson explained that she could control some of the mindless hate on her own social media. However, she couldn’t do that on the DWTS social media account. There wasn’t anything the Bachelorette star could do to stop that hate. So, she had no option but to “suppress it.”
While on Dancing With the Stars, she needed to talk with a therapist because she was “just trying to survive.” Detailing her feelings, she noted, “There were weeks where I’d come home from rehearsal where I’m like, I literally hope I forget my steps and get voted off… It’s a really dark place.”
