In 2021, the New Orleans Saints used the 28th pick in the first round to select defensive end Payton Turner. Coming to New Orleans, Turner had all the excitement and expectations of a first-round pick. Unfortunately, things quickly went downhill for the talented defensive end out of Houston.
Instead of racking up sacks like everyone hoped he would, Turner racked up injuries. Significant injuries led to him playing in five games as a rookie, eight games in year two, and just two games last season. All together, Turner has appeared in 15 games since being drafted in 2021, recording just three sacks, and 29 tackles, with eight for a loss.
Now, the 25-year-old defensive end is entering an all-important season. 2024 will be the fourth and final year of his rookie contract since the team declined to pick up his fifth-year option. Turner will be playing for his future in the league, hoping to prove that he can be a productive defender in the NFL.
He understands what’s at stake, and that’s why he’s ready for things to get rolling. Recently speaking with Houston reporter Aaron Wilson, Turner explained his mindset entering the 2024 season, saying he’s “ready to get after it.”
“I’m feeling good. I’m feeling healthy right now and I’m ready to get after it this year. The only thing you can do in this league is control what you can control. So, I’ve had some bad luck with some injuries. I’ve taken this year and last year and fine-tuned my process, my routine. I feel like I’m in a good spot heading into this year. I’m excited to see what I can do.”

Payton Turner is healthy and ready to get after it in 2024
Turner explained that he’s had unfortunate injuries, despite his readiness each season— he even had a back procedure earlier this offseason. However, he was able to participate in the offseason program, and is on track to report to camp fully healthy.
Like everyone else, Turner is excited to see what he can accomplish over a full season, if healthy. All of the criticism directed his way has stemmed from the fact that he hasn’t been on the field. In many ways, his potential remains a mystery. Hopefully, that mystery will be solved this season.
