Former Bachelor star Nick Viall is speculating that there might be more to the story when it comes to The Golden Bachelor couple’s Gerry Turner and Theresa’s divorce. Gerry, a 72-year-old retired restaurateur from Hudson, Indiana and Theresa, a 70-year-old financial services professional from Shrewsbury, New Jersey, got engaged during The Golden Bachelor, a dating series for seniors. They got married on January 4, 2024, in a live, televised ceremony. However, they shocked Bachelor Nation by announcing on April 12, 2024, that they were getting a divorce because they couldn’t decide where to live because neither one of them wanted to leave their families.
In an interview with People, Nick, who hosts The Viall Files podcast, shared that he was “shocked” and “surprised by the abruptness” of Gerry and Theresa’s divorce announcement, and he believes that there’s “more to the story.” He said, “Maybe Gerry’s not as golden as we hoped he would be.” Nick said that he’d welcome Theresa on his podcast to tell her side of the story, adding, “I don’t think it’s because they couldn’t find an apartment together. They clearly could have, they simply chose not to. Give it a couple months, and then this truth will come out.”

Nick also speculated that Gerry and Theresa’s divorce could negatively impact the upcoming and much-anticipated Golden Bachelor spin-off, The Golden Bachelorette, which premieres later this year. He said, “I think we all really enjoyed watching the Golden Bachelor and watching all these people earnestly look for love. And having a TV wedding only to get divorced in three months is not necessarily something that … I don’t think helped.” Nick is right that Gerry and Theresa’s short-lived marriage and subsequent divorce did tarnish the idea of the Golden Bachelor because it was the one franchise show that seemed to be real and genuine.
Nick is known for his strong opinions about all things Bachelor Nation, some of which can be unpopular. However, in this case, Nick’s thoughts about Gerry and Theresa’s divorce reflect how many people feel about the suddenness of their split. They went from making their love official in a very public wedding to announcing their divorce in just three months, blaming logistics as the reason for their breakup. However, it does seem strange that they didn’t work out the details about where they’d live before tying the knot, especially since they’re both so close with their families.
It’s also possible though, that Gerry and Theresa were telling the whole truth about their divorce. Perhaps they were caught up in the moment after The Golden Bachelor, and they took a leap of faith and got married before thinking about the future. It’s devastating to hear that they’re breaking up after inspiring so many people not to give up on finding love with their magical love story. However, their divorce doesn’t negate the hope that they gave everyone during The Golden Bachelor. Hopefully, The Golden Bachelorette will restore people’s faith in the franchise.
