After a dominant preseason last year, Boston Bruins forward Matthew Poitras earned himself a spot on the Original Six club’s roster at the start of the 2023-24 season. The then 19-year-old, who turned 20 in March, was an excellent surprise for the Bruins and immediately raised his value as a prospect.

Following his strong preseason, Poitras provided solid secondary offensive production for the Bruins during the regular season. In 33 games for the Bruins, he posted five goals, 15 points, and a plus-4 rating. Unfortunately, shoulder surgery ended his season in February.

Overall, while Poitras’ first season in the NHL came to a quick end, he left a great first impression with the Bruins. Now, his goal will be to build off his momentum and take a big step forward during the 2024-25 season with the Bruins. He undoubtedly has the potential to.

When looking at the Bruins’ current depth chart, Poitras has a great shot of playing in their middle six next season. While Elias Lindholm is the Bruins’ clear first-line center heading into next season, Poitras could make a case for himself for the 2C spot over Charlie Coyle with a strong camp. Yet, even if he ends up being the Bruins’ 3C, he will get the chance to shine.

Poitras’ playmaking skill should allow him to receive plenty of opportunities on the Bruins’ power play. Because of this, the youngster could see his numbers go up next season. This is especially so when noting that he should only continue to adjust to the NHL as he gains more experience.

When looking at how well Poitras performed as a teenager last season, it is hard not to feel excited about what he could do next season. Don’t be surprised if he becomes a key forward for the Bruins in 2024-25.
