Red Wings’ Rookie Max Plante Eyes Spot on Team USA’s World Junior Roster

Max Plante, a 2024 second-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings, is making significant strides at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase, vying for a spot on Team USA for the upcoming 2025 World Junior Championship. Although his inclusion on the roster was initially uncertain, Plante’s performance at the camp is turning heads and bolstering his chances.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde, who joined the USA coaching team at the showcase, was particularly impressed with Plante. “I was aware of his high hockey IQ,” Lalonde stated.

“But what has genuinely surprised me during this camp and development camp is his skating ability and his strength on his skates. He’s emerging as a first-rate talent.

Our scouting staff has done a phenomenal job with him.”

University of Denver coach David Carle, also present at the camp, commended Plante for his poise while playing with top American talents, particularly on the power play. “The pressure of playing with elite players can be daunting, but Max didn’t show any signs of that pressure,” Carle observed. “He seamlessly integrated with players who have more experience, which isn’t easy for younger talents.”

Throughout the week, Plante showcased his mix of smart play and agility, earning him valuable minutes and the opportunity to shine. While it’s still too early to determine if he will make the final roster for December’s championship, Plante certainly made a compelling case for himself.

On the latest episode of “The Silky Mitten State,” my co-host Connor Earegood and I delve deeper into Plante’s performance at the showcase.
