HBO has shared a new Max sizzle reel that includes footage of various upcoming shows. It included a segment devoted to The Last of Us, unveiling the first official footage of the second season.
As seen in the footage, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are both back in their respective roles as Joel and Ellie. Several newcomers are also featured, which includes Beetlejuice star Catherine O’Hara in a mystery role. She can be seen asking Joel in the footage if he “hurt” Ellie, to which Pascal’s character tearfully responded, “No, I saved her.” While the footage is brief, it also includes looks at new characters Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Gabriel Luna is also back as Joel’s brother, Tommy.
Based on the video game of the same name, The Last of Us was developed for HBO by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. It takes place two decades into an apocalypse where the world was ravaged by an infection that turned people into zombie-like monsters. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey led the cast as Joel and Ellie, the main characters of the video game. The first season also had notable guest stars like Nico Parker, Melanie Lynskey, Nick Offerman, and Murray Bartlett.
The Last of Us Season 2 Brings in Several Video Game Characters
More familiar characters from the video game are heading into the second season. Jeffrey Wright is reprising the same role he voiced in the original game, The Last of Us Part II. He’s playing Isaac, the leader fo the Washington Liberation Front. This incarnation of the character is described as “the quietly powerful leader of a large militia group who sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.”
“[Dina is] sort of a light in Ellie’s life, in Ellie’s world,” Isabela Merced also said about bringing the role of Dina to life, per Total Film. “I think that’s the general consensus, because you look at the video game, too, and she is really the only one who actually gets sort of a decent ending.”
She further teased, “I love, more than anything, to be that light for the people in my life. And I like to make them laugh, and I like to make them understand themselves more. I just like to help in general. I think Dina’s very close to my own personality. I think we’re both very silly, and I think I would maybe handle the apocalypse in a similar way if I were in it.”
Season 2 of The Last of Us doesn’t yet have a set premiere date.
