Flyers Take Shot on Former Top Prospect

The Philadelphia Flyers have made some notable moves this offseason, like extending Travis Konecny and signing top prospect Matvei Michkov. They also extended Garnet Hathaway, re-signed Bobby Brink, and kept Erik Johnson around.

Overall, Philly’s offseason has not been the biggest, but there is still time for them to make more potential moves before the regular season begins. When looking at their current group, it would not be particularly surprising if GM Danny Briere was open to adding a player on a professional tryout (PTO) contract.

One remaining free agent who stands out and could be an interesting target for the Flyers is Filip Zadina.

Zadina is a former top prospect who was drafted sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot winger was projected to develop into a top-six forward, but he never reached that initial expectation.

Zadina did, however, show signs of some improvement this past season with the San Jose Sharks, posting 13 goals – a new career high – to go along with 23 points in 72 games. While these are not necessarily dominating numbers, they show that he could be a decent bottom-six or depth option for the Flyers.

There is also still time for Zadina to take another step forward in his development, as he is only 24 years old. Perhaps joining a rebuilding squad on the rise like the Flyers could help him hit a new level.

Overall, it would not hurt for the Flyers to gamble on Zadina with a PTO. If he earns a cheap one-year contract from it, he could be a decent bottom-six option for their group, especially if his offense improves.
