After scoring 18 points in Team USA’s victory over South Sudan, Bam Adebayo had a quieter game Saturday against Puerto Rico. So much so that he was embarrassed his NBA team celebrated it.
The Miami Heat posted a message of congratulations to Adebayo, who finished with three points in Team USA’s 104-83 win over Puerto Rico. He added five rebounds and two steals, plus three assists, but Adebayo wasn’t all that proud of his “quadruple single.”
Adebayo has been great in international play, but on a team full of All-Stars, everyone’s counting statistics suffered. Scoring leaders Anthony Edwards (25 points) and Joel Embiid (15 points) combined to take 29 shots, nearly 38% of the team’s attempts.
During a game in which Steve Kerr seemed determined to get Joel Embiid and the once-benched Jayson Tatum going (Tatum had a 10-point, 10-rebound effort) and Edwards was unstoppable (shooting 11-for-15) there simply wasn’t room for Adebayo to go off.
Although if he had managed to block a shot, the Heat could have posted about his quintuple-single instead. Though he would probably prefer to have simply scored a few more points.
