The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Tuesday that the team will retire Eric Staal’s number 12. In addition, the team signed Staal to a one-day contract so he could retire a member of the Hurricanes.
Staal, 39, looks to be on track for the Hall of Fame after his tremendous career. In 18 seasons, Staal recorded 455 goals, 608 assists, and 1,063 points in 1,365 games.
He spent 12 seasons with the Hurricanes, four with the Minnesota Wild, and one with the New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers.
Despite only playing four seasons with the Wild, Staal’s 111 career goals ranks eight all-time. He recorded 111 goals, 129 assists, and 240 points in 311 games with the Wild.
Staal led the Wild in goals in his first two seasons with the team. In 2017-18 he recorded 42 goals, 34 assists, and 76 points. He became the second player in Wild history to have 40 or more goals in a single season and first since Marian Gaborik in 2007-08.
The former Wild forward still lives in Minnesota and spent the 2023-24 season coaching Edina boy’s hockey Bantam B2.
