Leon Draisaitl’s Future With Oilers Uncertain As Contract Talks Loom

With the recent appointment of Stan Bowman as the new general manager for the Edmonton Oilers, the focus has swiftly shifted to star player Leon Draisaitl and his future with the team. At 28, Draisaitl is nearing the end of his eight-year contract worth $68 million and speculation abounds regarding his potential continuation with the Oilers.

Reports widely suggest that Draisaitl has expressed a desire to remain in Edmonton, although an official deal has not yet been cemented. Despite the lack of formality in the negotiations so far, Jason Gregor of the Oilersnation remains optimistic about Draisaitl securing an extension, estimated to potentially be within the range of $13 million to $13.9 million annually.

Gregor shared his insights into the ongoing discussions around Draisaitl’s tenure with the Oilers in his column: “Ever since the Draisaitl extension talk began, I’ve felt he will sign around $13m-$13.9m and it will be a long-term deal. From my discussions with people in the organization, I’ve heard nothing that will change my mind. Enjoy your short off-season, at this point the only surprise would be if he doesn’t get a deal done.”

However, while there is a strong indication from some quarters within the Oilers organization of a positive outcome, TSN hockey insider Ryan Rishaug urges caution. He recently reported that while initial discussions have taken place, formal negotiations are yet to begin, making any immediate conclusions about the deal’s closure premature.

Rishaug highlighted, “On Draisaitl extension, sounds like the two sides have been in touch but actual negotiations haven’t started yet, those will commence here shortly. So any notion that it’s close to done is premature as of today.”

Drafted No. 3 overall by the Oilers in the 2014 NHL draft, Draisaitl has been a critical component of the team, notably forming a formidable duo with captain Connor McDavid. Over the past ten seasons, Draisaitl not only clinched the 2020 Hart Memorial Trophy but also delivered exceptionally with five 100-plus point seasons in the last six years.

As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will remain on Draisaitl’s contract developments, with the Oilers’ fanbase and management hoping for a resolution that keeps this high-performing athlete in Edmonton for years to come.
